Building Futures Through Skilled Trades
When you drive past a new building being built or step inside a home under construction, it’s easy to see the physical work—walls, roofs, and windows taking shape. What’s less visible is the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) knowledge that makes construction and architecture possible. Behind every skilled trades career is a strong foundation of STEM.
Construction and architecture careers combine technical skill with problem-solving and creativity. For example:
Together, STEM skills give students the ability to take an idea on paper and turn it into a structure that lasts.
Through our Building Trades and Construction Design Technology courses at Arnold High School and Rutherford High School, students experience this STEM connection firsthand. They design, measure, and build projects that mirror real-world construction tasks, preparing for future careers in architecture, carpentry, engineering, and beyond. Along the way, they learn teamwork, leadership, problem-solving skills, and certifications that open doors in every pathway.
The construction industry is one of the fastest-growing career fields, with opportunities ranging from skilled trades like carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work to architectural design and project management. These careers are not only in high demand but also offer competitive wages and opportunities for advancement. For students who enjoy hands-on learning, creativity, and making a lasting impact, construction careers are a pathway to prosperity.
When we highlight the STEM behind construction and architecture, students see that the trades are not “alternatives” to STEM careers—they are STEM careers. By choosing pathways in construction and skilled trades, students aren’t just building projects—they’re building their futures, their communities, and the world around them.
