Women in the Trades: Changing the Face of the Workforce

Building Futures Through Skilled Trades

When you think of construction sites, welding shops, or carpentry labs, the image that comes to mind is often male-dominated. But that picture is changing. Across the nation, more women are stepping into skilled trades, reshaping both the workforce and the future. In March 2024, the Institute for Women’s Policy Research published Quick Figure showing that the number of women working in the trades has reached the highest ever level since 2018, a growth of 28.3 percent over five years!

Breaking Barriers in Skilled Trades

For decades, women have been underrepresented in construction and related careers. Yet these fields offer high-paying, stable opportunities that align with problem-solving, creativity, and leadership skills. By entering the trades, women are breaking stereotypes and proving that talent—not tradition—defines success.

The STEM Connection

Women in the trades also highlight how skilled careers are powered by STEM. Whether it’s drafting designs with digital tools, calculating precise measurements, or applying engineering principles to build safe structures, STEM is at the core of every project. For young women who enjoy math, science, and hands-on learning, the trades open exciting career pathways.

Opportunities in Our Schools

Through our Building Trades and Construction Technology courses, female students are gaining firsthand experience in carpentry, electrical work, design, and more. These courses provide not only technical skills but also confidence and leadership opportunities, preparing students for successful futures in industries that need their perspectives and expertise.

Changing the Workforce, Building the Future

As more women enter skilled trades, the industry becomes stronger, more diverse, and better equipped to meet the needs of communities. These students and professionals are building more than homes and businesses—they’re building futures, breaking barriers, and inspiring the next generation to see opportunity everywhere.
